Liberation Day in Amsterdam: The Ins and Outs.
It's already May and time is flying by! This month will hopefully not only bring more sunshine, but also another holiday to look forward to: Liberation Day! On Liberation Day we celebrate our freedom and commemorate those who fought for it. Let us not just ignore this Liberation Day, but enjoy the festive atmosphere and realize how important it is to be and remain free. So time for the ins & outs of Liberation Day and what there is to do in Amsterdam!
Liberation Day: What exactly does that mean?
Liberation Day is a national holiday celebrated every year on May 5. On this day we commemorate that the Netherlands was liberated from the German occupation in 1945 during the Second World War. During Liberation Day we reflect on the sacrifices made for our freedom and the values we uphold today.
But Liberation Day is not only a day to celebrate, it is also a day to reflect on the history and consequences of war and oppression. On Remembrance Day, May 4, commemorations are held to honor the victims and reflect on the stories and experiences of people who lived through the war. For example, there is the National Monument on Dam Square, where every year at 8:00 PM there is a two-minute silence to commemorate the victims.
Liberation Day is an important day that reminds us how precious our freedom is and how important it is to cherish and protect it. It is a day to celebrate, but also to reflect on the values we uphold and to realize that freedom cannot be taken for granted.
